This question comes from homeowners who love their home but feel like it's stuck in the past — lights that don't respond to voice, no whole-home audio, entertainment systems scattered across every room with six different remotes. The good news: professional integration doesn't require you to gut your home. The right strategy delivers a dramatically better experience while preserving what already works.
What Retrofit Integration Actually Means
Retrofit — or brownfield — integration means adding smart home capability to an existing finished home. It requires a different toolkit than new construction, but it is far more achievable than most homeowners assume. At DLS, approximately half of our projects are retrofits.
What Works Well in Retrofits
Wireless lighting control. Lutron RadioRA 3 is purpose-built for retrofit applications. The keypads replace standard switches without requiring new wire runs — they communicate wirelessly with the Lutron hub and program to the same sophisticated scenes as hard-wired systems. The result is indistinguishable from new construction lighting control.
Streaming audio. Sonos and similar platforms integrate beautifully into existing homes. In-ceiling speakers can often be added through attic access and interior walls with minimal disruption to finishes.
Networking upgrades. Replacing consumer routers with enterprise-grade WiFi access points dramatically improves the foundation that every smart system depends on. This is almost always the right first step in any retrofit.
Security cameras. Modern PoE cameras can be run through existing conduit, attic spaces, and wall cavities in most homes. Perimeter coverage is achievable in virtually every property type.
What Requires More Planning
Whole-home automation platforms like Crestron or Control4 work in retrofits, but require careful planning around processor placement and integration points. This is completely achievable — it simply requires an experienced integrator who understands the constraints.
Hard-wired speakers in rooms without attic access above require careful wall fishing — a skilled installation team can accomplish this with minimal impact to existing finishes.
The Honest Assessment
A well-executed retrofit can achieve 90% of what a new construction integration delivers. The 10% difference is primarily in wiring elegance — a retrofit may use some surface-mount conduit where new construction would have concealed runs. In our experience, clients who prioritize performance over perfection of concealment are extremely satisfied with retrofit results.
We always recommend a site walk-through before any retrofit project. Understanding the home's infrastructure, attic access, wall construction, and existing systems allows us to plan accurately and deliver precisely.
